Two Netflix movies, ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘K-Pop Demon Hunter’, won multiple Academy Awards tonight.
Guillermo del Toro’s re-imagining of ‘Frankenstein’ won Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyle, while ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters,’ Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, won Best Animation and Best Original Song.
In recent years, films produced and distributed by streaming companies have had a steady presence at the Oscars, with “Roma,” “The Power of Dogs” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” winning major awards. But the biggest prize still appears to be out of reach for Netflix. Apple’s “CODA,” which was released at the height of the pandemic, remains the only streaming film to win Best Picture.
At the start of the awards ceremony, host Conan O’Brien joked, “This is exciting. It’s my first time going to the theater!”, mentioning the presence of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
‘Frankenstein’ was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor. Netflix’s “Train Dreams” and Apple’s “F1” (which won Best Sound) were also nominated for best picture, but those awards went to “One Battle After Another.”
