Kenya’s leading lawyer and former Attorney General Martha Karua said they were detained in Tanzania for the opposition leader, Tundu LISSU.
Karua said in a social media post that she is detained at major international airports and waits for deportation. Tanzania authorities have not yet mentioned.
Tanzanian politician Lissu will appear in court on Monday after being accused of rebellion last month.
KARUA is a respected human rights advocate and a vocal music for calling “democratic back sliding” in East Africa.
She also represented Kizza Besigye, an opposition politician who was kidnapped in Kenya last year and returned to her homeland to face rebellion.
Like LISSU, he refuses to prosecute, claiming that he has been politically motivated.
Karua was a former Minister of Justice in Kenya from 2005 to 2009 and was a colleague of former prime ministers who failed to bid in the 2022 election.
She started her opposition, the People’s Liberation Party earlier this year.
A spokesman for Karua said he was asked for three hours at Tanzania’s major cities Dar Es Salaam airport in AFP News Agency and said his passport was confiscated.
Karua is currently waiting for deportation with Kenya’s lawyer Gloria kimani and human rights activist Lynn Ngugi.
The Tanzanian Human Rights Federation has accused it of three “random arrests,” and instructed lawyers to try and secure them.
When KARUA appeared in court on April 15, he added that Karua was shocked to go to Tanzania and observe the procedure.
Human rights groups are increasingly concerned about the crackdown on the Tanzanian opposition party before the October presidential election.
LISSU, the leader of the major opposition Chadema Party, cannot be obtained because the maximum sentence was accused of rebellion, which was a crime that died.
He survived the assassination attempt after he was shot in 16th in 2017.
The opposition leader was arrested in April when he held a rally in accordance with “No Reform, No Election.”
He is calling for change by saying that Tanzania’s current law does not allow free and fair elections. The government denies the charges.
After his arrest, his Chadema Party was banned from the October polls, and he did not refuse to sign the Code of Conduct by the Election Commission.
This document must be “action” in the election and “keeping peace and harmony” in the election.
Chadema believes that the Code of Conduct will include opposition and national oppression.
