Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has vowed to fund medical support for any fan involved in the Huntingdon train knife attack after a season ticket holder was seriously injured protecting a young girl.
British Transport Police (BTP) said two people remained in a life-threatening condition and nine others were receiving treatment in hospital after a bloody incident broke out on a high-speed train on Saturday evening.
One of the people involved in the incident was a Forest season ticket holder, and it is understood he suffered serious injuries while protecting a young girl during the attack.
The man’s exact injuries or current condition are unknown.
Marinakis said he would cover the medical bills of any Forest fan injured in the horrific incident.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest is shocked and deeply saddened by what has happened,” the Greek businessman said in a club statement.
“The courage and dedication shown by our supporters on that train represents the best of humanity and the best of our club community.
“We will ensure that all sponsors involved in this incident receive all the financial support they need to ensure they receive the best possible medical care as they recover.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.”
Many Forest fans were returning to London by train after watching the 2-2 draw with Manchester United. As a result, their four-game losing streak in the league ended.
The club added: “Nottingham Forest Football Club would like to express its deep concern and sincere sympathies to all those affected by the shocking attack on a London-bound LNER train last evening.”
“Many of our supporters in London were returning home by train after the match at the City Ground and we are deeply saddened that everyone was caught up in this painful incident.
“The club recognizes that many people showed incredible bravery which no doubt helped prevent further harm.
“The whole Nottingham Forest family remains firmly behind them as they recover from yesterday’s events.”
Forrest said any fans affected by the incident should contact the club’s head of fan engagement.
