Now with Truecaller, you can block scammers on behalf of your family.

Caller identification platform Truecaller recently launched a new feature that allows one person to become the administrator of a family group, receive notifications about scam calls received by other members, and end calls on behalf of family members if they suspect they are being scammed.

The company, which has more than 450 million users, first launched the feature in December in a handful of countries, including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia and Kenya. After seeing promising results, Truecaller said it decided to launch the product globally, including in India, the company’s largest market. This feature is free and users can create groups even if they are not on a paid Truecaller plan.

This feature allows tech-savvy members of your family or friend group to become administrators for groups of up to five people. As other members join the group, administrators can receive notifications about fraudulent calls they receive. Calls may also be terminated remotely if the administrator determines that the call may cause harm to the member. Administrators can receive notifications about scam calls if members use iOS or Android, but can only end calls for Android members.

On Android, members can also give administrators permission to detect real-time activity such as walking or driving, battery level, and phone sound settings (ensure the phone is on silent mode). Truecaller says this helps managers keep tabs on older members and only call them when they’re not walking or driving.

Administrators can also block specific numbers and international dialing codes and share the block list with group members.

Truecaller noted that administrators cannot view non-spam call logs or SMS logs of group members.

“Unfortunately, I think we all know someone or someone in our family or friends who has been affected by a scam,” Kunal Dua, Truecaller’s chief product officer, told TechCrunch over the phone. “In that sense, this is a fundamental change for Truecaller in terms of what we have been focusing on as a problem,” he added.

Last year, Truecaller introduced a voicemail feature for Indian users with an AI assistant that listens to calls and provides transcription summaries when users are unavailable. The company is exploring a similar AI approach for family protection, to potentially alert managers to what types of scam calls group members are receiving.

The company is also exploring using AI to screen calls and automatically disconnect them when certain words related to scams, such as “digital arrest,” are detected. This is a tactic where perpetrators impersonate law enforcement officers to extort information or money from call recipients.

In India, scam calls have increased over time, causing financial losses across the country. Truecaller says it identified more than 7.7 billion scam calls last year. Indian authorities have launched a number of initiatives, including a controversial policy called SIM binding, which could disrupt the operation of apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

Truecaller is facing headwinds. The stock is down more than 80% in the past 12 months. In its fourth quarter 2025 report, the company said EBDITA, which measures operating profitability, fell 49% year-over-year, while advertising revenue fell 31%. The company is also facing issues with India’s Caller Name Display (CNAP) system, which displays callers’ names registered with their phone carriers. Truecaller claims that displaying the caller’s name alone doesn’t cut down on spam calls, and that the platform goes further by providing community-based reporting.

“There has been a lot of talk about the imminent launch of CNAP in India,” Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said during the Q4 2025 earnings call. “CNAP has been partially launched and has had limited impact on user growth so far. As we’ve said in the past, we expect CNAP to have some impact on user growth, but it remains to be seen when CNAP reaches full launch.”

Jhunjhunwala continued, “We remain focused on delivering great products, and as you know, consumers can choose to use CNAP and Truecaller simultaneously, where we provide consumers with more information, more context and a variety of solutions.”
