Olympics 2024: Great Britain win silver in thrilling men's team pursuit to win 1,000th modern medal | Olympic News

Britain won its 1,000th Olympic medal after a thrilling silver in the men's team pursuit final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday.

The British quartet of Ethan Hayter, Ollie Wood, Dan Bigham and Ethan Vernon were beaten by Australia in the final, losing by less than 0.3 seconds in the 4km race, before Hayter lost control of his bike on the final lap, giving Australia a 2.327-second lead.

The silver medal was the 1,000th medal won by Great Britain in the modern Summer and Winter Olympics, which began in 1896.

“We were so close, I could see it,” Hayter said. BBCWe will also be attending the Omnium and Madison events.

“In the last five laps, I gave too much. My whole body was so weak that I couldn't hold on to the bike any longer. I don't know how I held on.

“I feel sorry for the players, but we did our best and I think we can be proud of winning the silver medal.

“We had it today, we knew it. We went out there to get it, but we came up short. It's a shame.”

Australia last won the men's team pursuit title in 2004, but Oliver Bledeen, Sam Welshford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O'Brien won gold at the velodrome.

It was a close contest throughout until Heiter fell in the final, but Britain had to settle for silver.

Great Britain wins bronze in women's team pursuit

Britain also won bronze in the women's team pursuit after coming from behind to beat Italy.

Eleanor Barker, George Knight, Anna Morris and Jessica Roberts were narrowly eliminated from the gold medal race earlier in the day by the United States, which later won gold in New Zealand.

Italy looked set to take bronze with a lead of 1.3 seconds over Great Britain with five laps remaining, but fell behind and lost by 2.579 seconds.

Team Great Britain has won four consecutive medals in the women's team pursuit after winning gold in London 2012 and Rio 2016 and silver in Tokyo three years ago.

Beckett suffers from bad luck at sea.

Mickey Beckett is regarded as one of the unluckiest athletes in the Olympics after the dinghy medal race was abandoned, sadly missing out on a bronze medal.

The regatta in Marseille was hampered by weak winds, with the final race of the men's dinghy event already postponed from Tuesday and then again to Wednesday afternoon.

Britain's Beckett started the race in fourth place but looked all but certain to move up to third as his rivals floundered towards the final mark, prompting the judges to call off the race as conditions had changed too much.

They set off again an hour later, but this time the race turned into a nightmare for Beckett, who was penalised three times and finished last, dropping him to sixth overall.

Micky Beckett finished sixth overall in the men's dinghy.

“I came in second and was able to get the bronze medal. Everything was looking pretty good,” said Beckett, who was competing in her first Olympics.

“Of course it was pretty tough to have that taken away from me, but I thought, 'This is the sport, this is sailing in particular, these things happen, reset.' And I went for a second try.

“I've been penalized twice by the jury for locking. It's a really tricky rule. I've been penalized once in the last three years and twice in that game. It's something to think about going forward.

“And that put me back in the back of the fleet. And then I was in a position where I couldn't get back in there.

“It was really light (and windy) and super hot. To be honest, sailing isn't usually that slow and boring. It's usually a lot better. The race just chewed me up and spat me out. It's just a little tough. I'll get over it in time.”

The race was then cancelled that day, with Tokyo silver medallist John Jimson and Anna Burnett, who finished third in the mixed multi-body boat event, having to wait for the medal race.

Conditions are expected to improve on Thursday, with Britain's Ellie Aldridge expected to go for gold in women's kitesurfing.
