Olympics 2024: Ireland's Kelly Harrington wins boxing gold but Louise Richardson fails to qualify for 71kg final | Boxing News

Ireland's Kelly Harrington won gold in the women's 60kg class at the Paris Olympics, but Great Britain boxer Lewis Richardson was defeated by Mexico's Marco Verde in the men's 71kg final.

Harrington became a double Olympic champion after defeating Yang Wenlu in the women's 60kg final at Roland Garros.

After a shaky start, Yang appeared to be taking control, throwing more punches, but Harrington regained his composure and landed a flurry of punches before the fight ended.

The Chinese boxer exploded for the win in the second round with a powerful punch to the nose, but Harrington continued to inflict damage with powerful punches to the body.

In a comfortable final round, the Irishman landed a quick jab to give Ireland its fourth gold medal of the tournament.

Louis Richardson was defeated by Mexico's Marco Verde by a 2-1 decision in the men's 71kg semifinals at Roland Garros, settling for a bronze medal.

That night, Richardson lost to Verde by a 2-1 decision and had to settle for a bronze medal.

The Briton got off to a good start, landing powerful punches to Verde's face, but the Mexican got back into the round, using a variety of combinations to break through the Briton's defense.

In the second round, the Colchester fighter showed off his skills, winning the round with a powerful uppercut and two big blows to Verde's head.

The tight contest continued into the third round, with Richardson stepping up his attack and landing a powerful blow to Verde's nose.

The Mexican was hit in the face by the Briton but struggled to land a few big swings before being hit in the face again by Richardson.

But all five judges ruled differently, awarding the Mexican a first-round win, meaning Richardson's Olympic final dream was over.

The bronze means Richardson will be the only British boxer to win a medal at Paris 2024.

Richardson is the only British boxer to win a medal at Paris 2024 after losing to Mexico's Marco Verde in the welterweight division.

He had already secured bronze with a win over Zeyad Ishasi in the quarter-finals on Saturday and recalled the bitter feeling of missing out on the chance to win gold.

“It's so vivid, it's hard to process right now,” he said.

“I won a bronze medal, but it's hard to fully celebrate because I want to move on to the next medal and change the color of that medal.

“I am confident that when the time is right – and hopefully sooner rather than later – I will make a conscious effort to flip the switch and be proud of what I have accomplished.

“Right or wrong, I am the only British boxer to have won a medal at these Games and I hope I have made the British people proud.”

Verde will compete for the gold medal against Uzbekistan's Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev later this week.
