OpenAI hires first chief economist

OpenAI has hired its first chief economist, Aaron Chatterji, who was chief economist at the Department of Commerce under President Joe Biden and chief economist on President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Chatterji, who is also a professor of business and public policy at Duke, will study the economic impact of AI at OpenAI, leading research on how AI can impact economic growth and job prospects.

In particular, Chatterji helped coordinate implementation of the Biden administration’s 2022 CHIPS Act, which authorized approximately $280 billion in funding for computer chip development in the United States. His understanding of the project and political connections could help OpenAI carry out its chip design. Effort of your own.

Chatterji wasn’t the only big name in OpenAI today. The company also named Scott Schools, a former deputy attorney general and Uber’s head of compliance, as its new chief compliance officer. He will work with OpenAI’s board of directors and teams across the company on legal requirements and ethics, OpenAI said.
