
This may be an overstatement, but the story of being reunited with my mother was one of the most terrifying and important events of my adult life. Between today and being discharged from the hospital, I brought my phone to my mom, and she slowly started to understand it. It feels like a miracle. She is surprised and delighted by the ability to send text messages and the opportunity to have a small camera in her pocket.
I wasn’t sure she’d see the day when I could regain and maintain the grief-stricken clarity I’d lost over the years. Her courage, dignity, and joy of life are so moving that it brings tears to my eyes. She explains that she is an optimist because she was “born in spring.”
On May 10th, heaven willing, we will finally celebrate her 68th birthday together.…
