our reunion story

Mom%20and%20OrchidOn October 18, 2022, I received a call from an emergency psychiatric hospital in Buffalo. The social worker on the other end told me that my mom was in the hospital and that they were desperately trying to contact anyone who could help me understand where this woman who shares my last name was coming from. After 10 years of being distant due to circumstances, I finally heard my mother’s voice again. She had never had a phone and had long been in the throes of debilitating mental illness. I haven’t seen her for years. But this time her memory was better and she was able to remember my phone number and share it with the social worker.

This may be an overstatement, but the story of being reunited with my mother was one of the most terrifying and important events of my adult life. Between today and being discharged from the hospital, I brought my phone to my mom, and she slowly started to understand it. It feels like a miracle. She is surprised and delighted by the ability to send text messages and the opportunity to have a small camera in her pocket.

I wasn’t sure she’d see the day when I could regain and maintain the grief-stricken clarity I’d lost over the years. Her courage, dignity, and joy of life are so moving that it brings tears to my eyes. She explains that she is an optimist because she was “born in spring.”

On May 10th, heaven willing, we will finally celebrate her 68th birthday together.
