Papua Paradise Eco Resort: A Dream Escape in Raja Ampat, Indonesia

papua paradise eco resort a dreamy escape in raja ampat indonesia

There are places in the world that almost don’t feel real. It’s the kind of place you’ll look at photos of for years and wonder if it will ever live up to the hype. For me, Raja Ampat was one of those places. And after staying Papua Paradise Eco ResortI can honestly say it exceeded all my expectations.

My husband and I recently spent a few days here, and it was one of the most memorable stays we’ve ever had. Nestled on the untouched island of Birie in the heart of Raja Ampat, Papua Paradise feels incredibly remote, surrounded by turquoise waters, lush jungle, thriving coral reefs, and some of the most amazing marine life you’ve ever seen.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Raja Ampat and want something comfortable, peaceful, immersive, yet deeply connected to nature, this resort is truly special.

Papua Paradise is both adventurous and luxurious. The resort grounds felt like a true barefoot luxury retreat nestled deep in nature. Everything had a rustic yet sophisticated charm: wooden walkways stretching out over the turquoise waters, lush jungle surrounding the property and traditional overwater bungalows that blended in perfectly with their surroundings.

Wherever you go, you can hear birdsong, gentle waves, and jungle sounds all around you, creating a peaceful and immersive atmosphere. A place where you can immediately slow down, disconnect, and fully settle into island life.

Getting to Raja Ampat requires a bit of effort, but that’s why it retains a magical, untouched feel. Most international travelers first fly to Jakarta or Bali and then take a domestic flight to Sorong, Raja Ampat’s main gateway. From Sorong, Papua Paradise offers seamless transfers to the resort, making the entire process incredibly stress-free. Once we arrived in Sorong, the resort staff took care of everything from there. The transfer was a 1.5 hour speedboat trip. When we arrived at the resort dock and saw the overwater bungalows stretching across the beautiful lagoon, we already knew this place was going to be special.

Papua Paradise offers three bungalow categories: Deluxe, Superior and Premier, all built over the water in traditional Papuan style and designed to make you feel completely immersed in the surrounding nature. Whether you want something simple and cozy or something more spacious and classy, each category offers spectacular views and a peaceful atmosphere during the day for which the resort is famous.

We stayed in one of the premier bungalows and it was amazing. The bungalows are incredibly spacious and beautifully designed with traditional materials and local architecture, but are still very comfortable and thoughtfully designed.

Premier bungalows feature spacious bedrooms, living areas, spacious bathrooms and large outdoor decks. Our favorite part was the huge deck overlooking the ocean. We spent a lot of time there. Drinking coffee in the morning, watching the sunset in the evening, and simply admiring the unreal scenery that surrounded us. Waking up every morning to the sound of birds and waves gently moving beneath the bungalow was a truly peaceful experience. It felt like a complete disconnect from the outside world in the best way possible.

One of the things I particularly loved about Papua Paradise is how the rooms feel connected to nature. There is no flashy high-end luxury here. Instead, it’s all about simplicity, tranquility, and immersion in your surroundings. And for some reason, it feels even more luxurious. Here are some pictures of the bungalow:

The food at Papua Paradise was another highlight of our stay. Meals are served buffet style in the beautiful outdoor Seaview restaurant overlooking the house reef, and all meals are fresh, delicious and carefully prepared. We especially liked the traditional Indonesian dishes. There were so many comforting curries, grilled seafood, fresh vegetables, sambal and flavorful rice dishes.

You’ll notice that the resort emphasizes fresh ingredients and local sourcing. Most of the fruits and vegetables were sourced from nearby villages and the resort’s own gardens, so everything tasted incredibly fresh. One of my favorite memories is watching baby reef sharks swimming in the water below the restaurant while having dinner as the sun set over Raja Ampat.

The spa at Papua Paradise deserves its own separate section as it has become one of our favorite experiences at the resort. We booked a couples massage during our stay, and it was honestly one of the most relaxing spa experiences I’ve ever had. The spa is entirely surrounded by nature, so the only sounds you can hear are birds, waves and the surrounding jungle during your treatment.

Ayu was absolutely wonderful and made the whole experience very calming from start to finish. After a long day of snorkeling and exploring Raja Ampat, this was the perfect way to unwind. Papua Paradise is renowned for being one of the few luxury spas in Raja Ampat specifically designed as a place for healing, relaxation and rejuvenation.

One of the things we loved most about Papua Paradise was the amazing activities and excursions available. We planned something with the dive center almost every day, and there was never a lack of unforgettable experiences. If you are a driver or a snorkeler like us, there is plenty to do.

House Reef Snorkeling/Beach

There are two house riffs here and they are truly amazing. Both places have vibrant coral reefs, huge schools of fish, reef sharks and endless marine biodiversity right on your doorstep.

There is also a small beach area for your lovely guests.

Pam Island Holidays

Our trip to the Fam Islands was one of the highlights of our trip. The scenery throughout the entire trip is breathtakingly beautiful and feels too beautiful to be real. Piaynemo was just a dream!

This area of Raja Ampat is famous for its surreal limestone karsts, incredibly turquoise lagoons, and world-famous snorkeling spots such as Melissa’s Garden and Fam Slope. These are two of my favorite snorkeling spots in the world. The coral here was some of the healthiest and most vibrant we had ever seen. Below us are vast, endless coral gardens, teeming with reef fish in every direction. It felt like I was swimming through another planet.

Hornbill Sunset Cruise

One of the most unique experiences we had was the Hornbill Sunset Tour. At sunset, we took a boat out across the island to see hornbills flying overhead as the sun began to set. It was a truly magical experience to see these gigantic birds soaring across the glowing orange sky, surrounded by untouched jungle. It’s a moment that reminds us how Raja Ampat still feels wild and untouched.

Local snorkeling trip

We also took part in a local snorkeling trip organized by the dive center to Wai and Pulao Dua. We loved seeing the colorful coral gardens, schools of fish and especially the turtles! The biodiversity of Raja Ampat is honestly unlike any other place we have snorkeled before.

We also stopped at this spectacular sandbar for a water break.

Batanta Falls Cruise

The trip to Batanta Falls was another unforgettable experience and a nice contrast to all our sea adventures.

After a scenic boat ride, we passed through lush jungle paths and small streams to reach a waterfall nestled deep in the rainforest. The whole experience felt peaceful, refreshing and incredibly immersive.

Raja Ampat is certainly famous for its marine life, but trips like this remind us just how beautiful the scenery above the water can be, too.

One of the things I really appreciate about Papua Paradise is how thoughtfully sustainability is integrated into the entire resort experience. Their approach feels authentic and deeply connected to preserving the natural beauty of Raja Ampat while supporting the local community.

  • Refillable water stations throughout the resort and reduced use of single-use plastics
  • Traditional overwater bungalows designed using local materials and low-impact architecture
  • Waste sorting and composting practices that help minimize environmental impact
  • Responsible diving and snorkeling activities focused on protecting Raja Ampat’s fragile coral reefs.
  • Locally sourced ingredients and support for nearby communities
  • Strong commitment to coral reef and coastal conservation efforts
  • Warm, community-oriented hospitality with many staff from local villages

Between the incredible snorkeling, breathtaking scenery, peaceful overwater bungalows, and unforgettable excursions, our stay here felt truly magical from start to finish. Whether exploring the vibrant reefs, visiting the Fam Islands, watching hornbills at sunset, or simply relaxing on the deck overlooking the sea, every moment felt incredibly special.

What made this experience even more memorable was the warmth and hospitality of the staff. Everyone was very friendly, warm and truly passionate about making our stay an unforgettable one. We left Papua Paradise with so many amazing memories and are already hoping to return one day. If Raja Ampat is on your bucket list, I can’t recommend it wholeheartedly.
