Australia have advanced to the last 32 of the World Cup and Paraguay are well placed to join them after being held to a 0-0 draw in San Francisco.
The two teams finished Group D on four points, but Australia’s superior goal difference ensured they finished second and automatically qualified. They face the Group G runners-up in the next round, currently Iran, but could be Egypt, Belgium or even New Zealand.
Paraguay, set to secure a clean sheet, currently sits fourth in the top three, with eight of their 12 third-placed players having qualified. They didn’t get a shot until the second half after switching to a back three to match up with their opponent. Although sub Mauricio almost grabbed a late winner, it would have completely changed the situation and put Australia in big trouble.
Paraguay gave up four goals to the United States in the opener and 32 shots on goal to Türkiye in the second. However, this was a much more decisive and well-organized defense against Australia, who had a lot of possession but little incision.
Ultimately, this unforgettable game is about a result that will ensure Australia’s adventure continues and will be good enough for Paraguay as well.

Paraguay is optimistic about progress
Paraguay captain Gustavo Gomes: “It was an even, physical game. We struggled in the first half. I don’t think we found our footing. We made adjustments at halftime and got better in the second half.”
“The important thing is that we got a point. I think we qualified with this result. That was our main goal.”
