Paris, a mixture of celebration and confrontation

BBC Paris correspondent James Waterhouse described the French capital as “delighted” as he reported from the Champ de Mars where fans welcomed Paris-Saint-Germain (PSG) players after their Champions League win on Sunday.

But celebrations were tarnished on Saturday as thousands of police officers were deployed to curb unrest that disrupted public services and left 219 people injured.

French Interior Minister Laurent Núñez said eight people were in serious condition following clashes between soccer fans and police.

French authorities said 780 people were arrested in Paris following the clashes.
