Pep Guardiola says Kyle Walker has asked to leave Manchester City | soccer news

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that captain Kyle Walker has asked to leave the club.

Walker, 34, was left out of City’s squad for Saturday’s 8-0 FA Cup win over Salford.

After the game, Guardiola said: “He wants to explore for many reasons in his mind, he wants to go to other countries, he wants to play (elsewhere) for the last few years.”

“So I prefer to play with other players whose hearts are here.”

Since joining City for £50m from switch Tottenham in 2017, Walker has helped City win 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He came close to joining Bayern Munich following City’s treble win in 2023, but signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2026.

“The success we have had without Kyle is incomprehensible, it is impossible,” Guardiola said.

“Having a right-back (like him) gave us something we didn’t have and he was amazing.

“But he said he wanted to explore it with his mind and heart.”
