‘Person of interest’ detained in Brown University shooting

WATCH: Police release CCTV footage of Brown University shooting suspect.

A person of interest has been detained in connection with a shooting that left two people dead at Brown University, police said.

Nine people were injured in a shooting at a college in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.

Police confirmed Sunday that one person was detained and that an earlier order for people to evacuate the Brown campus and surrounding areas had been lifted.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven people were in stable condition, one of whom was in critical but stable condition and the other who had been discharged from the hospital.

According to officials, the gunman opened fire at around 16:00 PM (21:00 GMT) on Saturday in a classroom at Holly Institute of Technology on the east end of the Brown campus.

The identities of the dead and injured have not yet been released, but Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters at a press briefing Saturday that all victims, including those killed and injured, were students.

In a statement released by the university on Sunday, Paxson said some areas of campus remain restricted while police continue their investigation.

About 2,000 students were moved to safe locations overnight, she said, adding that she was “deeply moved” by the students and local residents who opened their homes.

She added that the families of the two slain students were receiving support.

“Words of consolation are not enough for the families who lost their children, but we will do our best,” he said.

Police previously released CCTV footage showing a male suspect leaving the scene wearing black clothing. Police said no firearms were found around the building.

The suspect was arrested and detained overnight at a hotel, a law enforcement source told the BBC’s US partner CBS News.

They added that he is not currently enrolled as a student at Brown University.

Police Chief Oscar Perez said the suspect was in his 30s but did not provide further details.

Perez confirmed Sunday that police were not looking for anyone else and were working with prosecutors to gather evidence.

Smiley said the city will be able to “breathe a little easier” after the shelter-in-place order is lifted.

“We have been training for this moment, but this is not something any community should be training for,” he added.

Hundreds of police officers and federal agents were dispatched to Providence Saturday to search for suspects.

President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday that the shooting was “horrible.”

The attack on the Ivy League university brought the number of mass shootings in the U.S. to 389 this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

A shooting is defined as one in which four or more victims, not including the attacker, are killed or injured.
