The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that raw pet food poses a significant risk to the public after tests found the products were often contaminated.
Raw pet food is not heat treated to remove pathogenic bacteria during production. There are concerns about the storage and handling of these products in the home and the potential for cross-contamination of food for human consumption and surfaces within home kitchens. The meat used in raw pet food initially came from animal by-products for human consumption but was later reclassified as pet food.
