PGA TOUR: England’s Alex Fitzpatrick leads Truist Championship as Rory McIlroy’s title hopes fade at Quail Hollow | golf news

England’s Alex Fitzpatrick entered the final round of the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship with a one-stroke lead, while Rory McIlroy’s title hopes were dashed in North Carolina.

Fitzpatrick used a mix of eight birdies and one bogey to shoot an incredible 7-under-par 64 at Quail Hollow Club to move to 14-under and one stroke clear of Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan.

Cameron Young shot a round of 63 to jump into third place and move two points clear of the lead, while Nicolai Hojgaard was fourth behind with interim leader Sungjae Lim in fourth place.

JJ Spun and Justin Thomas are both 9 under par and 5 strokes behind, and Tommy Fleetwood, who was one goal behind in the final group and middle round along with Lim Seong-hoon, is also tied for 6th place with 1 under par 70 strokes.

McIlroy, a four-time winner of the event, was four strokes behind the halfway lead, but fell down the leaderboard and out of contention after a third-round 75.

The back-to-back Masters champion birdied the par 4 first, but lost more ground after dropping shots on both par 3s on the front nine and making four straight bogeys on the back nine.

McIlroy had to settle for a birdie on the par-5 15th after missing an eagle attempt from 10 feet, and the world No. 2 closed with three straight pars to head into the final day at 1 under par.
