Hamburg police have confirmed they shot a man who threatened them with a pickaxe and an 'incendiary device' near a gathering of Dutch fans ahead of a Euro 2024 match.

The incident occurred in Hamburg's St. Pauli area on Sunday afternoon, ahead of a match between Poland and the Netherlands near the Volksparkstadion.

Hamburg police said in a statement: “A large-scale police operation is currently underway in St. Pauli. Initial findings show that one person threatened police with a pickaxe and an incendiary bomb. Police then used firearms. The attacker was wounded and injured. “He is currently receiving treatment.”

This incident occurred around the time Dutch fans were marching to the stadium, and about 40,000 supporters were staying peacefully in Hamburg.

Photos posted on social media showed thousands of Netherlands supporters preparing for their Group D match against Poland.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts, head of England Football Police's investigative branch, said: Sky Sports News: “There is no evidence of British involvement.

“Hamburg is a bit far from where we are, but it reminds us that there is a lot going on in the world that has nothing to do with football. People need to be aware of their surroundings and be careful.”
