Polkadot 2.0 introduces powerful features like Agile Coretime, Async Backing, and Elastic Scaling, making the network more flexible, faster, and more scalable.
This upgrade will allow Polkadot to evolve beyond a simple 0-to-1 blockchain technology into a highly decentralized solution for the new internet.
Polkadot 1.0: A Strong Foundation
Polkadot started with the idea of creating a heterogeneous multi-chain framework. The basic concept of the network was first described in Polkadot’s original whitepaper published in November 2016. A milestone was reached in Decoded 2023 when Dr. Gavin Wood announced the imminent release of the Polkadot 1.0 codebase. The successful completion of Polkadot 1.0 has achieved several key milestones, some of which are listed below.
50 diverse and interconnected chains that help expand the Polkadot ecosystem.
There are over 200 projects that have built blockchain solutions leveraging the Polkadot SDK.
The launch of OpenGov paves the way for a clear path to an industry-leading on-chain decentralized platform.
Polkadot XCM, enabling cross-chain communication between independent blockchains.
A staking platform that allows DOT token holders to participate in and strengthen the security of the Polkadot network.
Polkadot 1.0 also demonstrated its commitment to decentralization by achieving a Nakamoto coefficient of 93 in Decoded 2023. This strong foundation and unprecedented success laid the foundation for Polkadot’s evolution into Polkadot 2.0.
Polkadot 2.0: Flipping the Script
Polkadot is fostering an ecosystem that replaces bottom-up directives with community-driven actions, allowing the network to evolve in sync with the needs of the community. Polkadot 2.0 introduces a number of new features and improvements aimed at improving the user experience, lowering the barriers to entry, and aligning development with market demands. With Polkadot 2.0, Polkadot aims to streamline the user experience and onboard developers by making it easier for projects to leverage technology and capabilities, allowing the network to grow in line with the expectations of the community.
Journey of Change
Polkadot achieved its 1,000th proposal on July 16, highlighting the significant growth the network has seen since its inception. Polkadot 2.0 represents a transformative point in the network’s journey, building on its already self-sustaining cycle of community engagement, accessibility, and developer growth. It delivers three key technical advancements that lower the barrier to entry and significantly improve accessibility for projects and builders. These advancements also significantly improve scalability, speed, cost, and flexibility to help dApps grow.
Agile Coretime – Currently on Kusama, Agile Coretime facilitates dynamic core allocation for shorter periods of time via on-chain purchases or secondary marketplaces.
Asynchronous Support – Asynchronous support was launched on Polkadot in May 2023, helping to increase transaction throughput by reducing block times from 12 seconds to 6 seconds. It also allows for parallel transaction validation and 4x more data storage in each block.
Elastic Scaling – Elastic scaling allows projects to lease additional cores as needed. It works in conjunction with other improvements to provide dynamic scalability, allowing you to manage your compute needs as your project grows.
Creating a decentralized future
Polkadot 2.0 is already having a significant impact on the crypto landscape. Mythical Games has chosen Polkadot as the platform for groundbreaking projects like NFL Rivals. The cutting-edge social media protocol Frequency has also embraced Polkadot. The steady influx of innovative projects is complemented by several ecosystem initiatives, with several projects launching their own grant and funding programs. Polkadot 2.0 also lays the foundation for the next phase of Polkadot’s evolutionary journey: JAM.
