Popular Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene resigns from Congress over Trump feud

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced she will resign in January, an unexpected turn in her high-profile Republican tenure following a public feud with President Donald Trump.

Greene, who has become one of Trump’s Maga superstars in American politics, posted a video statement on social media announcing that she would leave Congress on January 5, 2026. “I’m looking forward to the new path ahead,” she said in a social media post.

Greene rose to mainstream fame for her support and promotion of conspiracies and her devout support for the president until their relationship soured recently.

She and Trump have publicly argued over the release of files related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

In a video statement announcing her resignation, Greene listed her accomplishments and criticized Trump for threatening to support a Republican candidate in an attempt to oust her in next year’s election.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, I love my family too much, and I don’t want my district to have to endure a toxic and hateful primary against me by a president we all fought for, only to fight and win while the Republican Party likely lost in the midterms.”

While she announced her withdrawal from the House of Representatives, US media reports indicated Greene was interested in running for state office, such as governor of Georgia or a Senate seat.

The president has publicly commented on these ambitions and, during a public feud, previously told Truth Social that she should not run for either of those offices due to poor polling.

Before their falling out, Trump and Greene had long been allies, with the Georgia representative championing an “America First” agenda.

But their relationship soured after Greene became one of the few Republicans to support a petition to release all files held by the U.S. government on Epstein.

Trump initially opposed the bill, but after it became clear that Greene and many other Republicans would join Democrats in passing the bill, he reversed course and asked Republicans to support the bill.

Greene has been one of the loudest voices calling for the release of documents related to Epstein, an issue that once united Trump and his MA base but has also caused divisions.

Over the past few months, she has appeared on several popular news shows and criticized Trump and fellow Republicans. She took issue with the president’s failure to sufficiently lower costs for his constituents and criticized his tariff policies.

Greene questioned whether President Trump is still pursuing “America First,” given his focus on foreign policy. But most of all, she criticized him and his administration for refusing to release the Epstein documents, which do not require congressional action. The president could order their release at any time.

Trump called Greene a “traitor” and a “weird person” in a series of social media posts. He said she should step down and pledged to support a challenger for her seat in Congress.

A bill to force the Justice Department to release the Epstein files passed Congress on Tuesday, and President Trump signed it into law on Wednesday.
