Team USA defeated an international team in one day to get off to a dominant start in its attempt to win its 10th consecutive Presidents Cup title.
For the second time in the 15th biennial team competition, the United States pulled off a first-round clean sweep to secure a commanding 5-0 advantage in fourballs heading into Friday’s foursomes.
This marks the beginning of U.S. captain Jim Furyk’s dream of retaining his title at Royal Montreal Golf Club of Canada.
Despite Thursday’s lopsided overall scoreline, three of the five four-ball matches came down to the 18th hole due to a string of missed opportunities by the international team and a gilded birdie putt on the back nine.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and partner Russell Henley recorded their most comprehensive win of the day, beating the Korean pair of Tom Kim and Im Sungja 3&2, but the match was held on the opening day. There was the biggest powder keg.
With the international team tied with back-to-back birdies, Kim and Lim walked to the 9th tee before Scheffler attempted to tie the score on the 8th hole, but the American ultimately missed.
