Products for UV protection and UV protection

July is UV Safety Awareness Month.

Stars – they are just like us!

For example, consider the sun. The fireball in the sky is 4.6 billion years old. This corresponds to middle age in terms of years.

And the sun is responsible for preventing all plants, comets, and asteroids from spinning out of control. Sound familiar?

While we tip our wide-brimmed hats to the sun for all that the sun does for us, it’s also important to be aware of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Studies have shown that ultraviolet rays cause 9 out of 10 cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and that the incidence of melanoma is increasing in women over 50 years of age.

UVA vs UVB rays

Ultraviolet rays are natural energy generated by the sun. You can’t see it, but your skin feels it.

There are two main types of ultraviolet rays:

  • UVA — long wavelengths that penetrate deep into the skin and cause premature aging and wrinkles.
  • UVB — the shorter wavelength that primarily causes sunburn.

Both types of UV rays damage the skin, and both can cause skin cancer.

Luckily, there are a variety of products available to help protect you from head to toe from UV rays.

Sunglasses are a real tool to protect your face when you’re up all night (thanks, vasomotor symptoms of menopause!) or when you’re running a marathon. this is us.

Sunglasses also help protect your eyes from UV exposure, which can cause cataracts, eyelid cancer, and sunburn. And yes, it is. Sunburned eyes are as terrible as they sound.

The good news is that most sunglasses sold in the United States are designed to block UVA and UVB rays. When in doubt, look for a label that says 100% protection against UVA and UVB, or UV absorption up to 400 nm.

The more coverage the style has, the better. Wrap-around sunglasses provide even better performance by blocking UV rays from the sides.

One simple way to protect your body from UV rays is to wear clothing with a UV protection factor (UPF) of 50 or higher. UPF 50 means the fabric is designed to block 98% of UV rays. And since UV protection is built into the clothing, you don’t have to worry about reapplying.

We all love fun summer sandals, but flip flops are shoelaces. Sandals provide absolutely no coverage and expose your feet to UV rays.

Remember to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin, including the tops of your feet and toes, whenever you strut out in the sun.

For added protection, UPF shoes and socks can help keep your feet comfortable and prevent skin cancer.
