Harry Kane described Bayern Munich’s defense as “amazing” in their 5-4 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat by PSG – but Wayne Rooney disagrees.
The nine-goal thriller was the first time both teams had scored four or more goals in a European semi-final.
Kane, who scored from the penalty spot, announced his full-time appearance. amazon prime: “Despite scoring nine goals, we had an amazing defense.
“You have the best players in the world: the best attackers, the best defenders. Of course, sometimes attackers rise to the top and show their quality.
“If you go back and see the centre-backs playing in the midfield, sometimes attacking, sometimes playing wide against the wingers, credit goes to them. It’s really hard work. I thought they were brilliant.”
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany questioned those who were unhappy with the goals scored and agreed that Kane’s defending was ‘good’. But Rooney thought differently.
he said amazon prime: “I love Harry Kane. Anyone can tell from what I say about him. But there is no way he would praise his defenders.
“Maybe it’s because they’re his teammates. He’s trying to give them some confidence for next week. Both teams’ defenses have been really bad, if he’s being honest.
“Both teams are so good at the top of the pitch that they might forget to defend, which means we could enjoy some great goals.
“But what the better players do is find breakthroughs. When you play against the best strikers, you have to adapt.
“You can’t hear defenders communicating anymore. I used to hear Jamie Carragher yelling at Liverpool defenders. It irritated me but it made his full-backs come back in.”
“They don’t have that level of communication now. That’s a result of the coaching.”
“It was a really hectic, chaotic game,” the former England captain added.
“Luis Enrique is the best coach, so I think when they got a 5-2 advantage they should have said, ‘Let’s stop talking and put the ball back.’
“But they have scored more goals and Vincent Kompany has a very attacking-minded Bayern team.
“We saw some immature defense. It was ridiculous.”
Kara: It’s almost impossible to stop a goal
sky sports Pundit Jamie Carragher praised the attacking display in the joint-highest scoring semi-final in European Cup history.
he said CBS Sports: “Usually when you see a game like that, you say things like, ‘The defense isn’t good enough’ or ‘It’s not up to this level of football.’
“But what I want to say is that every attacking player on the pitch was an 8 or 9 out of 10. Every attacking player had a better result than their opponent.
“When I remember the goal, it didn’t feel like the goalkeeper was barking or anything stupid defensively, it just felt like a great goal.
“The defense didn’t make fools of themselves. The attacking play was so high that it was almost impossible to prevent a goal.”
Henry: The risk paid off.
The goal festival held at Parc des Princes means that PSG (43) and Bayern Munich (42) have both scored more than 40 goals in the Champions League this season.
reacting CBS SportsThierry Henry said: “We’ve talked a lot about teams that don’t take enough risks. We talk about teams that don’t lose games rather than win them.
“We took a lot of risks tonight. If we put on our defensive hats, you might go crazy with what you saw tonight.
“But I don’t care. People have been complaining that football is boring. The game wasn’t boring. It was just crazy sometimes.”
This is why football fans love the beautiful game.
Analysis from Sky Sports’ Callum Bishop:
“Tonight served as a reminder of how beautiful football is when it is played at its freest, at a time when there are those who claim that tactics and systems have formalized the game.
“Watching the game tonight brought back the first memory of me falling in love with football – the first leg of the Champions League semi-final when Manchester United took on AC Milan at Old Trafford in 2007.”
“Milan’s second goal came when Kaka displayed an outrageous display of skill, sending Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze crashing into each other and reaching up the deck. He then showed perfect composure to slot past Edwin van der Sar.
“It was poetry in motion and at times removed from the modern game, but there were many breathtaking moments tonight.
“It leads to a goal fest and should be celebrated. Of course the goalkeepers and defenders won’t be happy, but if you ask anyone, they’d rather see something like this every week.
“This is a beautiful game summarized in its purest form over 90 minutes and there are still 90 minutes left in this tie.”
