Puerto Rico is gearing up for a busy holiday weekend, with hotel occupancy rates across the island expected to reach summer highs.
Puerto Rico Tourism Board-approved hotels are reporting strong demand, especially in the San Juan metropolitan area, with preliminary occupancy reaching 94.1% for the period July 24-27.
The agency expects Saturday, July 25, to be the busiest day of the weekend, with the average occupancy rate for approved hotels expected to reach 93%.
Willianette Robles Cancel, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Corporation, said the numbers reflect continued growth in the island’s tourism industry, with high demand from Puerto Ricans traveling within the destination during their vacations.
“We are very pleased with the continued growth our tourism industry is experiencing, including increases in hotel occupancy rates and residents choosing to support local tourism businesses and enjoy the many options and events available for domestic tourism during their holidays,” said Robles Cancel.
Strong Demand Across Puerto Rico
The metropolitan area, known as Porta Capital, currently has the highest occupancy rate of 94.1%.
Puerto Rico’s central mountain region, Porta Cordillera, reported an occupancy rate of 86.5%, followed by the northern Porta Atlántico region at 86.3%.
Porta Caribe, which includes destinations across southern Puerto Rico, has an occupancy rate of 83.5%, while the southwestern region of the island has an occupancy rate of 83%.
The northwest accounts for 82%, while Porta del Mar, covering eastern Puerto Rico, reports 80% occupancy.
According to the tourism office, the preliminary figure could rise further as hotels receive additional last-minute bookings ahead of the weekend.
Occupancy levels show widespread demand beyond San Juan, with hotels in Puerto Rico’s mountainous, southern, western and eastern regions all expected to benefit from the holiday travel period.
Puerto Rico has increasingly encouraged domestic tourism as a way to support hotels, restaurants, tour operators and attractions across the island, especially during holiday weekends when local residents often travel outside their home state.
The July weekend is expected to include events and tourist activity across Puerto Rico, making it what tourism officials expect to be one of the island’s strongest hotel weekends of the summer.
