College football comes to Puerto Rico for the first time.

This addition immediately puts Puerto Rico into a growing destination-bowl conversation that increasingly blends sports tourism and warm-weather travel experiences.
For travelers, the concept is simple. December college football games in the Caribbean come with beaches, resorts, nightlife and winter sun, and U.S. citizens can travel without a passport.
These combinations have already transformed the bowl game in places like the Bahamas over the past decade.
Now Puerto Rico has its own version.

Caribbean Bowl Game History
Although the Puerto Rico Bowl marks the first time Puerto Rico has hosted a U.S. college football bowl game, it is not the first Caribbean region to host a postseason matchup. The most notable example is Bahamas Bowldebuted in Nassau in 2014 and became the first major college football bowl game between two U.S.-based teams outside of the United States and Canada since the historic Bacardi Bowl in Havana in 1937. The game helped establish the modern Caribbean bowls model, combining winter travel demands with nationally televised post-season football. Stadiums in Bayamon
The game will be held at the following times: Juan Ramon Rubriel Stadiumis one of Puerto Rico’s most famous sports venues and is located approximately 20 minutes from Old San Juan.
Bayamón has long been one of Puerto Rico’s major sports centers, particularly soccer and athletics, and the Bowl adds another major event to the municipality’s calendar.
Fans traveling for the game will have easy access to some of the island’s most popular tourist areas, including: army, green island, old san juanand beach areas along the northern coast of Puerto Rico.

Perez called the new bowl a “historic landmark event” that reflects Puerto Rico’s growing status as an international sports destination.
The island has already hosted high-profile baseball, basketball, boxing and international soccer events in recent years, as well as major convention and entertainment programs centered around San Juan and nearby municipalities.
Puerto Rico’s Sports Economy Expands
New bowl games have also been released as Puerto Rico continues to expand its broader sports business presence, particularly in the sports betting space.
Over the past few years, the island has emerged as one of the most actively regulated gaming markets in the Caribbean, with sportsbook operators including: BettingMGM and Caesars Sportsbook Join DraftKings to launch retail and mobile betting operations tied to major casino properties in the San Juan region.
The advent of nationally televised college football bowl games adds another major sports asset to that ecosystem, bringing together tourism, lodging, games and live events during one of Puerto Rico’s busiest travel periods.

Conference Connection
The Mid-American Conference has already confirmed its participation in its first game.
“Through our long-standing bowl partnership with ESPN Events and Complete Sports Management, the Mid-American Conference is excited to have the opportunity to participate in its first Puerto Rico Bowl,” he said. Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, Central American Conference Commissioner.
Steinbrecher said the event will provide a “memorable experience” for players and fans.
Opposition council affiliations have not yet been announced.

While the Caribbean has hosted college basketball tournaments and neutral site sporting events for many years, soccer presents other operational challenges, especially at the NCAA bowl level.
