Lagos, Nigeria, August 31, 2024 – On Thursday, Africa-based cryptocurrency exchange Quidax announced that it had become the first cryptocurrency exchange to receive a provisional operating license from the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a digital asset exchange.

Under the license granted by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Quidax is authorized to operate as a registered cryptocurrency exchange in Nigeria, as the country begins to provide formal recognition and much-needed regulatory oversight to the cryptocurrency industry.

Buchi Okoro, co-founder and CEO of Quidax, said of the development:

“At Quidax, our customers are our top priority and every decision we make is to ensure that our customers can trade on our platform with ease, security and confidence. We commend the SEC, under the leadership of Dr. Emomotimi Agama, for taking bold steps to bring order, confidence and investor protection to our industry. This is a huge win for Nigeria’s acceptance of cryptocurrencies and we are excited to be part of this historic moment.”

The Quidax CEO also expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian regulator for working with industry stakeholders to create guidelines that will drive innovation and build trust in the emerging crypto ecosystem. Buchi said this represents a significant step forward for crypto and will help Nigeria to lead the way in crypto regulation.

With the license granted by the Nigerian SEC, Quidax is now authorized by the Central Bank of Nigeria to work with banks and other financial institutions. This license also strengthens trust in cryptocurrencies and protects crypto enthusiasts in Nigeria.

In an email sent today, Quidax thanked all of its customers and employees who have supported the company since its early days.

The email stated that this SEC approval could be like an adrenaline rush for the Nigerian crypto community to push the envelope and is a recognition of all the hard work the staff has put into safety, security, and compliance.
