Quiz: Can you tell the difference between a real British insult and a fake?

How can I ignore you? Some British researchers are exploring methods such as asking people around the country to send in swear words and insults that are largely unknown to outsiders.

“We’re really interested in words that only have meaning if you’re from a certain region,” said Chris Montgomery, a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield, who is leading the effort with arts group Modern Toss.

Dr Montgomery said their hope was to preserve the diversity of swear words used across the UK, especially where those swear words were ambiguous. “This is a real window into people’s creativity through language,” he said.
