
At the 2026 World Aerospace Chiefs of Staff meeting, British Royal Air Force officials confirmed that the planned GCAP fighter jets will be designed for boom refueling. This means it will not be compatible with the RAF’s hose and drogue refueling system from the start.

This follows previous renderings that depicted the GCAP fighter jet as having what appears to be a door for a refueling canister, but without a similar hatch containing an extendable refueling probe.
The RAF has long favored hose and drogue refueling, sometimes at considerable cost to custom-modify aircraft designed for boom refueling.

While reducing fuel delivery rates compared to the flying boom system favored by the U.S. Air Force and later adopted by many other air forces, the more compact hose and drogue system allowed for simultaneous refueling of multiple receivers from a single tanker aircraft and allowed the use of fixed probes and fuel piping to be modified for aircraft that historically did not have built-in refueling capabilities.

These modifications were made when the RAF’s VC10 and Tristar were converted from civilian specifications, and were adopted on the Avro Vulcan and Handley-Page Victor early in their careers. Hawker Siddeley Nimrod also received this upgrade as an urgent requirement for the 1982 Falklands War. It remained in service for decades until 2006 when a Nimrod MR2 XV230 crashed over Afghanistan, killing all 14 people on board. The cause was narrowed down to a fuel leak or overflow that occurred during aerial refueling, and all aerial refueling operations using Nimrod were discontinued in 2007.
Modern, stringent airworthiness regulations have already called into question the safety of the Nimrod and will most certainly prevent further modifications to aircraft fuel systems without a significant testing and certification process. Many aircraft are therefore now introduced into RAF service without any modifications and therefore have no opportunity to be refueled from the RAF’s own fleet of tankers. These include the RC-135W Rivet Joint, P-8A Poseidon MRA1, C-17A Globemaster III and soon the E-7A Wedgetail AEW1.

The recent decision to procure 12 F-35A Lightning II aircraft as part of the next tranche of F-35 orders will add another boom-refueling-only aircraft to the RAF’s inventory. Hose and drogue modifications to the F-35A are said to be possible, but no customer has specified this option and it is unlikely that the jet will be put into service to purchase such a small quantity.
The A330 MRTT is in service around the world with its flying boom system, but the RAF’s example, known as Voyager, owned by the AirTanker consortium and leased to the RAF through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), is only suitable for hose and drogue refueling operations. Voyager KC2 aircraft are configured with two wing-mounted Cobham 905E hose and drogue units, while Voyager KC3 aircraft are additionally equipped with a Cobham 805E fuselage refueling unit (FRU) in the rear fuselage with the option for higher fuel transfer rates for larger aircraft such as the Airbus A400M.

The RAF’s Voyager, although still relatively new, is one of the oldest MRTTs currently in service. Delivery began in 2011 and was completed in 2016. Of the 14 aircraft delivered, nine will form the ‘core’ fleet permanently available for military use, while the remaining five will be available for civilian charter or lease when not required by the Ministry of Defense (MoD).
For this reason, each Voyager was assigned both a military serial number and a civilian registration, and the aircraft occasionally moved between the Core and Surge Fleets as needed. Civilian registration will remove the military modifications and revert it to an Airbus A330-200 for all intents and purposes. One particular aircraft, ZZ336, was selected to receive special upgrades for VIP transport in 2015 and was later decorated with a British government paint scheme. Although still occasionally used for VIP duties, the A321neo is now more often used on long-term charter flights by Titan Airways. Therefore, the aircraft, also known as ZZ336 or Vespina, is generally seen supporting British training sorties or Quick Response Alert (QRA) operations.

It has often been said that AirTanker would oppose retrofitting Voyager aircraft with flying boom systems because it would complicate movement of the aircraft between civilian and military fleets. But whenever such an idea has been approached, AirTanker officials have suggested that there would be no problem with such a move and that it would just require commitment and funding from the Department of Defense to make it happen.
Notably, the current PFI for Voyager aircraft is scheduled to expire in 2035, less than a decade away, which coincides with Voyager’s official out-of-service date. By this time, the oldest Voyager spacecraft will be over 20 years old and would be ideal candidates for replacement. Therefore, instead of modifications, it may be prudent to pursue modifications and/or extensions to contracts covering the procurement of new aircraft airframes with flying boom systems already installed.

Adding boom refueling to the RAF’s capabilities has been one of the most talked about ‘small’ improvements that could be made among seasoned commentators and enthusiasts for some time. Not only will it open the opportunity to better support the RAF’s boom-only aircraft, which currently rely primarily on US Air Force tanker support when needed, but it will also allow for greater interoperability with many NATO allies that operate boom-only aircraft such as the F-35A and F-16.
The prospect of the GCAP joining the ranks of boom-only RAF aircraft could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Due to the long range of the P-8, C-17 and E-7 and the close collaboration of RAF RC-135s with USAF operations, the RAF may argue that organic refueling of these aircraft is a low priority, but the inability to refuel what will be the RAF’s future premier fighter aircraft would severely cripple the Air Force’s ability to project a sovereign air force.

No matter how long the GCAP fighter’s legs may be, current operations show that flying a fighter mission without some form of tanker support is almost unheard of.
