In a season where set-pieces are the talk of the town, Rayan Cherki has become a household name for making the game fun in his debut season in English football.
Since settling in at Manchester City, Cherki has established himself as a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side and one of the most exciting players in the Premier League.
At a time when football’s systems and tactics seemed to have become more rigid, Cherki served as a throwback. He combines talent and risk-taking with the final product to make him a must-watch. He ranks second only to Erling Haaland in goal contributions for the Etihad team this season.
Jamie Carragher described the France international as a ‘dictator’ early in the season, which sums up what he has contributed to Guardiola’s side. The famous coach may sometimes roll his eyes at some of the tricks his new star pulls off, but he can’t help but admire him.
Cherki feels like a unique footballer of the modern era. Many have grown up to idolize the likes of Ronaldinho, Neymar and Lionel Messi, but few play as kin to those stars as the former Lyon man. But the 22-year-old believes there is still room for more players like him.
“People who come to the stadium today want to see players creating more and more,” Cherki said. sky sports.
“If I think about doing a backheel or a rabona or a sombrero flick or a long shot today, that will allow me to be who I want to be.
“You can’t hold back, try it, because in today’s football you can’t succeed at everything, but if you try, you have a better chance of succeeding than if you just talk about it.
“I don’t want football to become an ordinary sport or a sport that gets less attention. I want people who are less passionate about football to tell themselves that football is a sport that brings up a lot of emotions.
“It’s a sport that takes your mind off your problems. I get on the pitch to help the team win, to be decisive, to win as many games as possible. And it’s a lot of fun.
“Tackling is also part of the fun. (Abdukodir) Khusanov, Marc (Guehi), Matheus (Nunes), Rayan (Ait-Nouri) and even Nico (Gonzalez) show incredible resilience and make tackles all over the pitch.
“It’s a form of art, it’s a way to love football and I think we have the right to continue on this path to make football richer than it is today.
“Football is my whole life, being a footballer and being a romantic is part of who I am and I will never stop doing that.”
‘Attackers don’t defend like defenders and vice versa’
He may already be one of the Premier League’s most adept players on the ball, but the demands of playing under Pep Guardiola have meant Cherki has had to adapt to taking on more defensive responsibility.
For some this may limit their creativity, but the Frenchman was very clear in a simple analysis of what he needs in possession.
He added, “I think I should help the team as much as possible.” “Strikers don’t defend like defenders and defenders don’t attack like strikers, that’s for sure.
“You have to keep in mind that every team today has great resources: Erling (Haaland), me, Antoine (Semenyo), Phil (Foden), Omar (Marmoush), Jeremy (Doku) – we all serve the team defensively, sometimes we may defend a little less, but it’s the same.
“We’re not going to ask Kusanov, Marc or Ruben (Diaz) to attack the way we want to attack, so it’s a good middle ground to find. And once you feel good, you understand the effort you have to put in.”
The commitment to working as a team is undoubtedly a prerequisite for any Guardiola side. The Catalan has sometimes been criticized for hindering the development of standout players such as Jack Grealish, but Cherki has spoken positively about working with his new boss.
“I have learned a lot from Pep so far, because I learn every day. I see something new every day,” he said.
“I think it’s his love for football, the dedication he puts into what he does every day. Even when it’s perfect, he’ll still try to get better and that’s similar to me.”
“That’s why I get on so well with Pep because even when I’m playing well, he’ll always try to find little negatives to make my game better. That’s what I think is special about him.”
