Rebels on the front lines of Myanmar’s civil war

Civil war has torn the country apart five years after Myanmar’s military chief led a coup to overthrow the country’s democratically elected government.

Clashes between the military and ethnic and rebel groups have killed thousands of people and displaced millions.

Two years ago the rebels made a series of huge gains, but the situation got worse. Forced conscription and increased drone power have forced the military to go on the offensive in most parts of the country.

The BBC’s Quentin Sommerville traveled to Myanmar without permission from authorities, the only way to report from rebel-held territory.

During his 10 days there, he spent time with rebel fighters and visited hospitals and front-line positions in Bago and Karen states to see how the war was unfolding.
