Updated foodborne infection estimates suggest a greater burden due to Shigella and a decreasing impact due to norovirus.

In 2015, the Foodborne Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) of the World Health Organization (WHO) published estimates of the incidence and mortality rates of diarrheal diseases caused by 11 pathogens at the global and regional levels in 2010.

The latest study updated the figures to 2021 by adding Rotavirus, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC). The findings will form part of WHO’s broader estimates of incidence and mortality from foodborne illnesses.
