Boxing great Ricky Hatton died by suicide, an inquest heard today.

An inquest into his death opened at South Manchester Coroners’ Court with Coroner Alison Mutch announcing the cause of death.

She told the court that Paul Speak, Hatton’s manager and long-time friend, was found unconscious in Hatton’s bedroom on September 14.

He was scheduled to travel with his fighters to Dubai for a press conference to officially announce his return fight.

Hatton, nicknamed ‘The Hitman’, won the super lightweight world championship and one welterweight title during his 15-year professional career.

The British boxing great was due to return to the ring in December.

Hatton’s illustrious career included epic fights with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a legendary victory over Kostya Tszyu.

Hatton held several world championships in the ultra-lightweight and welterweight divisions during his boxing career from 1997 to 2012.

He built a passionate fan base as he rose through the ranks and won the British super lightweight title in 2000. His popularity spread widely throughout the sport.

In 2005, in one of the most memorable nights in British boxing history, he defeated the great Kostya Tszyu to become world champion at the MEN Arena in his hometown of Manchester, which established him as the best fighter in the division. He then beat Carlos Maussa to unify the IBF and WBA titles.
