Ronnie O'Sullivan's eight-year unbeaten streak at the Shanghai Masters was ended on Saturday when he lost 3-10 to Judd Trump in the semi-finals.
Ronnie O'Sullivan's eight-year unbeaten run at the Shanghai Masters came to a dramatic end on Saturday when he was crushed 10-3 by Judd Trump in the semi-finals.
O'Sullivan was looking to make it five in a row after winning 21 straight tournament matches, but he struggled in the afternoon as Trump led 8-1.
Trump, who has never won a Shanghai Masters title, was overwhelmingly dominant in this session, shooting 106, 128 and 127.
O'Sullivan came out fighting in the evening, clearing 71 to take the first frame of the session, but Trump's costly errors saw him go 8-3 ahead, but Trump responded with breaks of 110 and 67 to win over O'Sullivan for the first time since 2020.
During the break, the death of O'Sullivan's former mentor and coach, Ray Reardon, was announced. The 91-year-old six-time world champion had been battling cancer.
Trump to face Shaun Murphy in Shanghai Masters final on Sunday
After the 'Wizard' overcame an 8-5 deficit to beat Mark Selby 10-8, Trump will now face Shaun Murphy in Sunday's final.
“I think the level of play was probably similar to the Masters final. I felt comfortable and knew I had lost to him several times in a row,” Trump said after his win.
“You definitely don't want to have a record where every time he plays you he dreams of a chance, so it was nice to get one back and show that I can still play a little bit.”
