Rubio said the United States had made “significant progress” toward a tentative deal with Iran.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration has made “significant progress” in negotiations with Iran. A senior U.S. official also said the U.S. and Iran had agreed in principle to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and for Iran to destroy nuclear materials. Iran has not commented publicly on the potential agreement.

Suffice it to say that some progress has been made. Significant progress has been made, although it is not final. So we’ve made some progress over the last 48 hours on an outline that, working with our partners in the Gulf region, will ultimately, if successful, mean a completely open strait, meaning an open strait without tolls, and address some of the key points that have underpinned Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions in the past. I’m always careful when I say this. Because you can agree on what’s on paper. You really need to implement it. You can agree in writing and you have to actually go out and do it.
