Sacred hall containing Japan’s ‘eternal flame’ destroyed by fire

A fire broke out at the Reikado Hall on Miyajima Island in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture.

Reikado is part of the Daishoin Buddhist temple complex and the temple houses the ‘Eternal Flame’ which has been burning for almost 1,200 years.

According to the Japan Times, the temple moved the flames elsewhere, which authorities said may have started the fire.

The fire was first reported Wednesday morning and was confirmed to be extinguished on Thursday.

According to the Japan Times, Reikado Hall also burned down in 2005, but the flame was preserved.
