Air traffic through San Juan declined slightly earlier this year, according to newly released January figures from ASUR, which manages Puerto Rico’s main air hub.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport handled 1,190,578 passengers in January 2026, a 2.1% decrease from the 1,216,168 passengers recorded in January 2025.
Domestic transportation leads the decline
The overall decline was driven by a slump in domestic travel.
Domestic passenger traffic in January 2026 was 1,053,646, a 2.6% decrease from 1,081,636 in January of the previous year.
Domestic routes account for the majority of San Juan’s passenger traffic, so changes in mainland U.S. demand are particularly impactful to overall performance.
international transportation advantage
International traffic has shown a moderate increase, consistent with recent trends in San Juan.
San Juan had 136,932 international passengers in January 2026, a 1.8% increase from 134,532 in January 2025.
Although international travel still represents a smaller portion of the airport’s overall volume compared to domestic routes, this increase suggests gradual strength in markets outside the continental United States.
The January results reflect a slight decline in passenger numbers following steady post-pandemic growth in recent years, with domestic demand a key variable determining San Juan’s performance in early 2026.
