This week at CES, Savant Systems announced the Savant Smart Budget, a feature in its Smart Power system comprised of modular relays and equipment that integrates with existing circuit breaker boxes.
If you are already reaching the limits of your breaker capacity, Smart Budget can help you overcome this by automatically controlling individual circuits. This allows you to add higher power connections, such as more appliances or EV chargers, than your electrical box can supply at once. For example, you can set your EV to power on overnight after you finish using the oven. This kind of control can also be useful when running on household batteries or solar power.
Savant says its systems, which start at $1,500 and require installation by a qualified electrician, are cheaper than working with an electric utility provider to upgrade to higher amperage service, “which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.”
These parts fit “most major electrical panels” with standardized “1” breaker spacing, says company CMO JC Murphy. The Verge, Includes panels from Schneider, Eaton, GE, ABB, Siemens, and more.
According to Murphy, the Smart Budget kit includes what Savant calls “power modules,” two 30-amp single-pole circuit breakers and one double-pole 60-amp circuit breaker and a current tracker for the circuit you want to monitor. Also included is a Savant “Director” hub and sensor. The company sells additional power modules for $120 for a dual 20-amp or single-pole 30-amp version and $240 for a 60-amp dual-pole module.
