Researchers have proposed selective changes to food labels to help reduce the risk of listeria infection.
Scientists at Denmark’s DTU National Food Institute said the idea was to give consumers the opportunity to choose ready-to-eat (RTE) foods such as smoked salmon and seasoned pork rolls without the risk of contracting listeria bacteria.
Listeria accounts for almost a third of all deaths related to food poisoning outbreaks in the EU. Infection poses a higher risk to older people, people with underlying health conditions, other vulnerable groups, and pregnant women.
