Scotland: Kris Boyd not ready to ruin Steve Clarke's plans | Football News

Scotland have not won a competitive game for more than a year, but Sky Sports' Chris Boyd has warned the Tartan Army that changing their manager is not the answer.

Steve Clarke has been criticised after his side's disappointing performance at Euro 2024 and the pressure is on after back-to-back Nations League defeats.

After conceding a 97th-minute winner against Poland, Portugal inflicted further suffering on Scotland when Cristiano Rolando netted a second-half winner.

The national team have won just one of their 14 games and conceded 33 goals during that time, but Boyd believes there is more to come.

“It's easy to say, 'Just get rid of that guy and you can get a new manager. Why tear something up?'” he said.

“It happens to all Scotland fans. You're having a good run and you're on a good run, and then a few bad results ruin it all.

“I know there will be pressure if we don't win the game, but we have to remember that this group has qualified for the European Championship twice and was also the top group in the Nations League.

“There's a lot to praise about this group. It may be time for a change, but it's not now. If Scotland keep doing what they're doing, I think they have a very good chance of qualifying for the World Cup.”

There are many positive aspects to Scotland.

Lynden Dykes ruled out of Euro 2024 due to injury

While the current form will be difficult for any Scotland fan to accept, Boyd is focused on what will be positive for Clarke and his squad as they look to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

“In the end, it was a tough camp for Steve Clark, but I don't think the results were that bad.

“When you look at the way Scotland set up with a 4-2-3-1, I thought it gave them more control in the centre. The back four weren't great defensively, but they offered more going forward.

“Once Kieran Tierney is fit, everything will change because we need to find a way to bring in the best players for the team.

“Having Lynden Dykes come in will be a huge boost for Scotland because he's not just going to throw the ball forward. He's going to use his head and get other people involved in the game.

“I don't think any other striker can do that, so I think it's essential for Scotland to keep Linden Dykes fit.

“He's in decent form now but he may not be playing football regularly and that could have an impact in Scotland.

Scott McTominay led Scotland to a shock early lead against Portugal.

“There have been some good performances from my perspective. Scott McTominay has scored 10 goals in 17 internationals, which is a massive comeback. I think the likes of Ryan Christie, John McGinn, Kenny McLean and Billy Gilmour have been impressive at times and there have been some good performances in there.

“I think looking at Scotland, it could just be a transition period, maybe seeing if they can bring in some young players and develop them.

“We can't win the Nations League and there's a good chance we'll be relegated. But the most important thing is that we're ready for the World Cup qualifiers.

“Steve Clarke will know that and he will prepare his players.”
