Newcastle have signed midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a fee worth £23m.
The 18-year-old has joined Newcastle on a five-year contract that will pay him £20m plus £3m in bonuses.
Steur is the club’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon for a total of £169m, followed by Hoffenheim winger Bajumana Toure (£42m) and Reims goalkeeper Eben Jauen (£18m), while midfielder Bruno Guimaras is keen to join Arsenal.
Who is Sean Steuer?
Steur began his career at RKAV Volendam before joining Ajax’s academy in 2016 and enjoyed a breakthrough season last season, making 25 appearances in all competitions after making his senior debut in the 2024/25 campaign.
He made three Champions League appearances and became the club’s youngest player to record an assist in the competition.
Steur won the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy, Ajax’s annual award for the club’s most outstanding academy talent, joining Ryan Gravenberch, Christian Eriksen, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart.
He also progressed through age groups for the Netherlands from U15 to U19.
Sky Sports News We know that Ajax and Steur are at odds over his role in the team next season. Steur believed he deserved a more important role than the club could guarantee him.
It is believed that this inconsistency has led to the teenager being listed to play for the U21 side.
‘It’s really hard to turn down Newcastle’
Steur said: “It feels amazing to be here. It’s a huge club in the Premier League and it’s always been a dream of mine to play in the best league in the world, so it’s really exciting.”
“I was at Ajax. I joined when I was seven and left with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes along it’s really hard to say no. The last few days have gone by quickly and I’m really happy to have joined.”
“I am a player who likes to get the ball and always play forward. I enjoy playing between the lines and I feel there is a lot of energy in the game. I just want to win.”
Howe: Top young prospect
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said: “We are delighted to welcome Sean to Newcastle United. He is a top young prospect who has already tasted the Champions League and top Dutch football.
