Segun Olowookere: A Nigerian man sentenced to death in Osun State has been promised clemency.

There were protests across Nigeria at the time, as many people felt the sentences were too harsh.

The two were later transferred to Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, a notorious maximum security prison in Lagos State, where they were placed on death row.

In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Ademola Adeleke directed that Olowookere should be pardoned because it is important to protect the sanctity of life.

“I have instructed the Minister of Justice to begin the process of granting the young man the privilege of mercy.

“Osun is a land of justice and fairness. We must ensure fairness and protect the sanctity of life,” the governor posted on X.

The fate of Morakino Sunday, who was sentenced alongside Olowwere, is unclear as his name was not mentioned in the statement.

Olwalkere’s parents, human rights groups and other Nigerians have been fighting for his release for years.

His parents recently appeared on a podcast and cried and pleaded for forgiveness for their only daughter.

He is expected to be released in early 2025.

Nigeria has not carried out an execution since 2012, but currently has more than 3,400 people on death row.
