
Sergio Perez has condemned the homophobic comments his father Antonio made towards former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
In a podcast interview ahead of this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, Antonio Perez Garibai made a homophobic slur towards Schumacher. Schumacher said the former Williams driver, who now works as an F1 expert for German Sky, had claimed his son. I was ready to lose my place at Red Bull.
Schumacher announced earlier this year that he was in a same-sex relationship.
“First of all, I don’t agree with him,” Sergio Perez said. Sky Sports News When asked about his father’s comments.
“In that respect I think he made a mistake. I don’t share his views at all, but at the same time I can’t control what my father says. I can only control what I say.
“It’s important as a sport to show that you’re always there no matter what happens on the track. That’s the way I see it and we should always be an example to the whole world.”
Schumacher, the younger brother of seven-time F1 champion Michael, raced for Jordan, Williams and Toyota between 1997 and 2007, winning six grands prix in 180 races. He was previously married to Cora, whom he married. They have a son David, 23, who is also a racing driver.
The 49-year-old posted a response to Perez Garibay’s comment on Instagram.
“I will also support my son 100% and try to help him,” Schumacher wrote.
“That’s what you do as a father. As far as style is concerned, I may differ, but we know all the feelings of Mr. Perez, so I’m not angry with him. But I think the results on the track will make him a better captain. .”
