Sky Sports F1 Ted Kravitz analyses Adrian Newey's options amid speculation that Aston Martin is in the running to recruit the outgoing Red Bull design chief.
Red Bull confirmed in May that Nieuwe would step down as chief technology officer and remain with the team until early 2025 to focus solely on its hypercar project.
The 65-year-old has since been linked with moves to Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin, with recent reports suggesting Aston Martin is the frontrunner.
Speaking about the latest episode Sky Sports F1 PodcastTed explains why Aston Martin could be an attractive choice for Newey.
He said: “Look at the investment that has already been made at Aston Martin. Look at their factory. They have already brought in Dan Fallows, who worked with them successfully at Red Bull.
“I imagine he must have spoken to Dan Palos and said, 'What kind of place am I going to? What kind of place is it?'
“I asked Dan Fallows in Hungary if he would be happy to have Newey join. Fallows said, 'What you need to know is that Adrian is a tenacious and unstoppable Formula 1 competitor. I would be surprised if he didn't join another team, and I would certainly welcome working with Adrian again at Aston Martin.'
“We’ve all discussed with various people at Aston Martin what we can offer to someone like Newey. We can say, ‘Just come in, be the boss, sprinkle some magic dust here and there, get our guys on the right track, and I think with Fallows and the team that’s already there, we have the ability to do the rest.’
“For Newey it's a matter of judgement. He's where he wants to finish happily. And the current leader is Aston Martin if you believe the rumours, but it could be any of them.”
In this episode, Ted also analyses Oliver Oakes' appointment as Alpine team principal and Jonathan Wheatley's departure from Red Bull to become Sauber/Audi team principal.
Alonso coys about Newey link.
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso was asked in June about the possibility of Newe joining the Silverstone team, but dismissed the reports as “just rumours”.
“I read the rumours and the news, but they come from the same sources and websites,” said Alonso, who earlier this year signed a new contract with Aston Martin that will keep him until the end of 2026. “A week ago (reportedly) he was at Ferrari, so the rumours are just rumours.”
Asked what he would say to Newport to convince him to join the team, Alonso added: “That's between me and him.”
Aston Martin has struggled to build on its strong performance in 2023, finishing fifth in the constructors' standings, well behind the top four teams of Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes.
But Aston Martin owner Laurence Stroll continues to spare no expense in trying to get the team to the top of the grid, with recent Ferrari signing Enrico Cardile and former Mercedes engine expert Andy Cowell among the team's top drivers.
