Topped with smoked salmon, red onions, capers and all bagel seasoning, these smoked salmon toasts have all the flavor of a traditional lox bagel with cottage cheese and over 30 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber. It’s quick and satisfying and perfect for breakfast, lunch or a light dinner.

Smoked Salmon Toast with Cottage Cheese
Lox and bagels are always a classic for me, but when I want something a little lighter and more balanced, I opt for this high-protein smoked salmon toast. Instead of bagels, I use hearty, fiber-rich whole grain bread and swap the cream cheese for cottage cheese to get a protein boost while still maintaining the creamy texture I love. If you’ve been enjoying the cottage cheese recipes I’ve been making lately, this is another easy way to use cottage cheese beyond sweet bowls and dips.
materials needed
Although the bread and cream cheese have changed, everything else is the same as when ordering lox and bagels. See recipe card below for exact measurements.

- Whole grain bread: I love Dave’s Killer Thin-Sliced 21 Whole Grains and Seeds bread. That’s because it’s higher in protein and fiber (3 grams each) and lower in carbohydrates and calories than most other brands.
- Cottage Cheese 2% It offers the same creamy texture as cream cheese, but with fewer calories and more protein. Good Culture is still my favorite brand.
- Novarox This is ‘Cold Smoked Salmon from Nova Scotia’. Buy any type of lox or smoked salmon you can find.
- vegetable: Sliced Persian cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, red onion
- seasoning: Bagel seasoning and fresh dill are both classic choices. On lox and bagels.
- Optional Ingredients: Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and add capers. You like it.
How to Make High-Protein Smoked Salmon Toast
Bake bread, chop vegetables, and assemble for a quick and satisfying meal. See recipe card below for printable instructions.

- Toast the bread In the toaster or oven. The more you bake the bread, the better it will hold up under all the toppings.
- Assemble the toast: Spread cucumber, tomato, lox, red onion, bagel seasoning and dill on each bread slice. Drizzle with oil and top with capers, if desired.
Customize your Lox toast
- Bread Options: I think this toast would be delicious with sourdough on top. If you prefer bagels, try this high-protein bagel with cottage cheese.
- Not sure about cottage cheese because of its texture? If you don’t want it to be lumpy, mix it in a mini food processor until smooth.
- Dairy Free: Spread mashed avocado on toast.
- vegetable: Try swapping heirloom tomatoes for cherry tomatoes, using regular cucumbers, or pairing them with pickled onions.
- Additional Protein: Add soft-boiled or hard-boiled eggs.
- Hub: If you don’t have fresh dill, you can use dried dill or chives.
