Southern Lights timelapse taken from the SpaceX Dragon shuttle

The spectacular Southern Lights have been captured on camera from space.

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir captures this time-lapse aboard the SpaceX Dragon shuttle.

The Southern Lights are as common as the Northern Lights and occur regularly in Antarctica, but they are not as well known as the Northern Lights because relatively few people live at latitudes close to the South Pole.

This light comes from near the poles because the Earth’s magnetic field moves particles from the Sun toward that area, where they collide with the atmosphere and create sparkling waves of color.
