Puerto Rico’s peak summer season starts early again this year. Southwest Airlines is adding more flights from Orlando to San Juan in the meantime.
The airline is increasing its following flights: Orlando and San Juan start in JunePart of what Southwest is talking about is its largest expansion to Orlando ever. The airline has not yet disclosed the exact number of additional San Juan flights, but the move adds more seats to one of the country’s busiest Caribbean air routes.
Southwest is already operating roughly. Weekly Episode 77 Connecting Orlando International Airport with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, the route is one of the airline’s largest Caribbean routes.
The added frequency comes as Puerto Rico continues to record strong tourism demand and airlines continue to expand Caribbean flights from Florida ahead of the summer travel season.
One of the largest mainland routes in the Caribbean
Orlando-San Juan has become one of the region’s flagship routes.
Part of that is due to Central Florida’s huge Puerto Rican population, which creates year-round traffic between the island and Orlando. However, the route has become one of the fastest growing leisure corridors in the Caribbean.
You can leave Orlando in the morning and arrive in San Juan before lunch. This ease has made Puerto Rico one of the most booked Caribbean destinations for short trips, long weekends, and summer vacations.
This route is crowded almost all season.
Weekends and public holidays sell out quickly. Summer departures regularly fill up weeks in advance. Even in the traditionally slow Caribbean months, demand remains strong as it comes from both holidaymakers and visiting families.
Southwest is clearly confident that demand is still growing.
Building a Bigger Orlando
The airline said the new flights are part of its largest-ever Orlando operation with expanded schedules across both domestic and Caribbean markets.
San Juan remains one of the network’s most important Caribbean destinations.
Competition for the route is already fierce, with airlines including JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit and others flying frequently between Orlando and Puerto Rico. More Southwest flights mean more capacity entering the market ahead of peak summer demand.
For travelers, this generally means more departure options and more opportunities for competitive fares, especially during mid-week travel periods.
Filling the mental gap
The addition of Southwest flights also marks a pivotal moment for Orlando’s Caribbean network. Spirit Airlines has become one of the dominant low-cost carriers between Central Florida and Puerto Rico, especially on the high-volume San Juan route built around low-cost leisure transportation and family visit demand.
As Spirit reduces flights and reorganizes parts of its network, airlines including Southwest are stepping in to absorb some of that demand. More Southwest flights will replace seats taken off the market while helping maintain pressure on summer rates during the busiest Puerto Rico travel period of the year.
Puerto Rico Continues to Draw Summer Travelers
The additional service arrives amid another major tourism push for San Juan.
Condado’s beaches fill up early, rooftop pools fill up by noon, and hotels across the region continue to see a surge in bookings as summer approaches.

In Old San Juan, travelers fill the green cobblestone streets around Calle San Sebastián and Calle Fortaleza, hopping between cocktail bars, coffee shops and late-night restaurants.
Santurce’s restaurant scene continues to draw visitors beyond the traditional resort area with venues such as; santaella, mealand Miramar House The city’s most difficult reservations remain.

Impact on Freight Rates
More flights on high-volume Caribbean routes often increase pricing flexibility heading into summer.
Orlando-San Juan rates typically increase quickly in June and July, especially during school holidays and holiday weekends. Additional seats can help expand inventory at lower rates within your reservation window.
Puerto Rico is becoming increasingly important, especially for travelers looking for a short Caribbean trip instead of a week-long vacation from Florida and the East Coast.
And this summer, more Southwest jets are scheduled to head south to San Juan.
