
A red alert was also issued for Catalonia in northeastern Spain, especially the coast near Tarragona, until Wednesday evening.
Schools throughout the southern province of Málaga were closed and many supermarkets were also closed.
The Andalusian regional government said about 3,000 people living near the Guadaljorse River had been told to leave their homes.
“We did not evacuate the whole village, but certain areas connected to the riverbank,” said regional government president Antonio Sanz.
“This decision has been communicated to the Spanish government to obtain the cooperation of national security forces and institutions.”
The International Tennis Federation said the opening match of the Billie Jean King Cup between Spain and Poland has been postponed due to a severe weather warning in Malaga.
The two countries were due to play in Malaga on Wednesday.
Preventive measures are being taken in other parts of Spain, with the eastern and southern Mediterranean regions being the most vulnerable.
