Spotify said today that it is expanding its AI-powered feature to create playlists called Prompted Playlists and also include podcasts.
The company began testing its prompted playlist feature in New Zealand late last year, with a focus on creating music-based lists. This year, the company launched the feature in new regions, including the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.
Now in beta, premium users in all markets can create AI-powered playlists for English-language podcasts. Users can start by tapping “Create” and selecting the “Prompted Playlist” option and add prompts such as “Create a playlist of True Crime podcasts I might be interested in. Add highly rated series I might have missed, especially ones full of twists and turns.”
Users can also choose how often the playlist is updated using options such as daily, weekly (you can select days), and never update. The company said that when a particular episode is added to a playlist, a short note will appear indicating why that episode was included in the list.
“Podcast fans are always looking for the next great music to listen to. Prompted Playlist makes discovery effortless and feels personal. It opens up powerful new opportunities for discovery for creators, delivering both their back catalog and new episodes to audiences who actively signal what they want to hear,” Lizzy Hale, Spotify’s global head of podcast editorial, said in a statement.
Spotify noted that more than 34 million podcasts are discovered on Spotify every week for the first time. The company is focused on enabling more podcast discoveries with this new AI-powered feature. Users say they can view prompted playlists created by Spotify’s culture team on their home screens and easily customize them by adjusting the prompts.
Audio streaming companies have been adjusting their platforms to be more podcast-friendly. Earlier this year, we lowered the monetization threshold for video podcasts. Under the new rules, creators must publish three podcasts, have 2,000 hours spent in the last 30 days, and have at least 1,000 listeners engaged in the last 30 days. There are more than 530,000 video podcasts on the platform, co-CEO Alex Norström said during the company’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call in February.
