As 2024 draws to a close, we asked Sky Sports Rugby League experts to give us the highlights, biggest shocks and what to expect from the new Super League season…
Brian Carney’s Rewind to 2024…
What is your favorite moment from the 2024 season?
“Respect” sung by the Bumper Hull KR crowd ahead of kick-off in the semi-final against Warrington. The atmosphere was heavy with a variety of emotions.
The Robins were a revelation this year, making it all the way to the grand final before receiving a harsh reminder of what sustained excellence looks like.
Shock for the 2024 season?
The capital’s club has undoubtedly pulled off what is considered the shock of the season. It could be said that the Catalans’ season was 50/50 at best in 2024, but not many could predict their demise away to the London Broncos in round 20. It’s a proud day for David and the Hughes family.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
Watching Bevan French. Once upon a time this might have been a reference to the Wire wingman, one of the greatest things the game has ever seen. He is now the best on-field entertainer in Super League. French may be the most thrilling rugby player in both codes in the world at the moment.
John Wilkin’s Rewind to 2024…
What is your favorite moment from the 2024 season?
Brian Carney throws the ball to Rod Stewart instead of Rod Stud. We couldn’t stop laughing. I was actually excited that Rod Stewart might transition into sports broadcasting later in his career. But no, it was a small but huge mistake.
Shock for the 2024 season?
Perhaps Hull FC knew that throwing in the towel for 2024 without further investment would be a wise move. They cut costs with players and Adam Pearson lay in the bunker waiting for help in the form of Myler family ties.
I think Pearson should be respected if he didn’t have the resources. He did the right thing by not getting into financial trouble.
He would have been absolutely criticized by Hull FC fans. The shock of 2024 was the realization that winning games no longer mattered so much. It’s important, but not as much as it used to be.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
The rise of Warrington under Sam Burgess, the evolution of St Helens you should feel, the return of a new and shiny Wakefield Trinity, the Robins putting their name on a trophy and none other than Wigan lifting the trophy.
Liam Farrell is out for three months due to a repetitive stress shoulder injury suffered while lifting the trophy.
Rewind to 2024 by Barrie McDermott…
What is your favorite moment from the 2024 season?
Bittersweet to me, the Rob Burrow game was a wonderful tribute to a great man and his immediate family who are role models for his entire rugby league family, the Department of Defense and of course ourselves.
We all know that day will come, but when it did, it was very sad and hopeful at the same time. The broadcast was another example of what Sky and sport can achieve when they work together with a common goal.
My friend would have been delighted with the team’s performance and the final farewell before the game.
Shock for the 2024 season?
Hull FC and what a disappointment they were from start to finish. In fact, it made things worse!
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
I really enjoy the challenge of being a captain. It will bring an additional element to the game and give us all more to discuss and discuss. When to use it, who should use it, and who shouldn’t be more interesting than anything else.
Rugby league has always been revolutionary in its approach, so let’s see how it goes. Who knows, we might see other sports in this country adopt it as well.
Jamie Jones-Buchanan’s Rewind to 2024…
What is your favorite moment from the 2024 season?
“Moment” was Bevan French’s try against Leigh in the 59th minute of the semi-final.
like Having been playing the game for 20 years, I never tire of seeing unique moments of genius, prophetic vision, and athletic prowess.
Shock for the 2024 season?
The fact that 60% of Hull KR fans walk to the stadium highlights the deep-rooted community spirit surrounding the game. Craven Park is probably the only place where Craven Street can really thrive and where fans can tune in to the vibrant 80s pop renditions of groups like Erasure. It’s really fantastic.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
We assess whether Super League’s all-time top scorer Ryan Hall, paired with the better strike rate of NRL’s Maika Sivo, can help lift Leeds Rhinos from the abyss.
Courtney Winfield-Hill’s rewind to 2024…
What is your favorite moment from the 2024 season?
That’s the way it should be in Super League. Ryan Hall scored a record number of tries in both the home and women’s matches, while Georgie Hetherington was named Woman of Steel.
Shock for the 2024 season?
That will happen in the men’s game. Salford Red Devils’ performances have caused uproar around the club due to player departures early in the season.
Loved by women Barrow’s results in their first year in Super League.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
England v Australia Ashes at home stadium will be great and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves will arrive for Hull KR.
The women’s competition will see England take on Australia in Las Vegas, with Wigan Warriors Women looking to continue their impressive rise into 2024.
