Warrington Wolves held off a brave fightback from Wakefield Trinity to secure a 27-16 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and maintain their perfect start to the new Betfred Super League season.
After Marc Sneyd kicked a penalty to put Wolves ahead, Toafofoa Sipley bundled himself up in the 33rd minute and grounded the ball that was initially hanging over the line and a try was awarded after a lengthy review by the video referee.
The visitors kept the momentum going with a second try just three minutes later after breaks from Danny Walker and Albert Hopoate went under the post.
Just before half-time, Sipley was shown a yellow card for repeated fouls and Max Jowitt kicked the penalty as Warrington took a 14-2 lead at the break.
Wakefield rallied early in the second half and took advantage when Jake Trueman’s pass to the left found Jayden Myers running into the corner.
But Warrington struck back shortly after Sneyd’s kick was touched down by Josh Smith before restoring the lead to 22-10 with another penalty just after the hour.
But Trinity showed their fine form once again with 10 minutes remaining when Oliver Pratt’s try followed up Jack Shinfield’s kick-through, which was converted by Jowitt.
Warrington ultimately secured victory in the 78th minute with a well-coordinated effort after Sneyd’s corner was well saved by Smith and Toby King fell.

However, the second half was mostly one-way traffic with Clark picking out Jacob Host for his second try of the afternoon in the 50th minute and 10 minutes later Hastings found Wright over the line to score.
Clark got his fourth after Alex Walmsley put the Saints ahead and Hasting’s fourth conversion of the afternoon gave them a 24-0 lead.
The Catalans pulled one back before 10 minutes to avoid a whitewash when Josh Simms rushed down the left and played the ball inside for Charlie Staines to cross from a corner, but Toby Sexton missed the conversion.
The Saints kept pushing. Hastings added two points to their tally when they kicked a penalty with nine minutes remaining, before Kyle Feld tacked on two tries in three minutes.
First Harry Robertson found him in a corner and crossed the line, and at the death he jumped high to catch Hastings’ kick to add further sparkle to the scoreline.
