Zach Eckersley scored a hat-trick to help Wigan secure a hard-fought 24-10 win over bottom-placed Huddersfield in the Betfred Super League.
The Giants were looking to snap an 11-game losing streak and got off to a dream start against the second-placed Warriors when Taane Milne dived over a corner to make it 4-0.
Their lead lasted just seven minutes before Wigan scored their first attempt. Adam Keighran was able to combine with Oliver Partington, who showed quick feet before stretching.
The Warriors extended their lead in the 30th minute when Keighran and Harry Smith attacked down the right and passed to Eckersley to send him over the whitewash for his first of the night.
Huddersfield were level in the 56th minute with some great work of the ball from left to right before Jacob Gagai slotted home to make it 10-10.
The home side thought they were in front when George Flanagan broke through. He gave the ball to Nile Ebels and found Gagai crossing the tryline, but the referee ruled it out in favor of a forward pass in the build-up.
They were punished minutes later when the Warriors won the Captain’s Challenge with a high tackle on George Marsden and Keighran kicked two points to push them forward.
Wigan sealed victory late in the game. Eckersley doubled over in the final five minutes to record a hat trick and give the Warriors a point.
Campbell appears in Saints win
Youngster Jack Campbell scored twice on debut as St Helens defeated Catalans Dragons 34-18 in the Betfred Super League.
The depleted Saints lost to Toulouse last time out, but their next generation starred at the Brewdog Stadium, sending the Catalans to a fourth successive defeat.
The visitors got off to the better start and took advantage of Jack Welsby’s injury to score the opening try in the eighth minute, breaking down the left before Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet found Charlie Staines.
St Helens drew level 10 minutes later when Jed Cartwright fired home a superb one-handed kick before touching down against a team coached by his father John.
Nick Cotric applied the finishing touch on the half-hour mark as the Catalans moved back in front and the visitors thought they had two more goals before half-time but Lewis Dodd knocked in and Ben Condon slotted the forward pass.
And the Catalans were quick to rue their missed opportunities as Saints struck three times within eight minutes of the restart.
First Tristan Sailor’s clever pass set up Campbell wide before Tom Humphreys kicked for Harry Robertson to touch down and Welsby raced under the posts after a great break from Humphreys.
The Catalans responded quickly after Cotric took an acrobatic touch into the corner, but Campbell, who made tackles that prevented two attempts, extended their lead to 10 points when Robertson, 20, added his second and final score in the final minute.
