About once a week (especially during the summer) I crave a big, juicy burger. Huh?
I didn’t grow up eating a lot of red meat, so I don’t tend to do that. love Regular beef cheeseburger. Instead, I opt for a juicy chicken (or turkey!) burger grilled to perfection on a toasted bun. Since your girlfriend also loves sweet and spicy barbecue sauce, I chose the following recipe. BBQ Chicken Burger It was essential. Sure enough, they quickly became popular.

Wait, there are sweet potatoes in the burger?
yes! We add chopped raw sweet potatoes to the burger mixture right before cooking. This adds:
- Unique and slightly sweet
- Vitamins A, C, fiber, potassium
- Extra moisture for the juiciest chicken burgers
We’ve fortified vegetables to make them packed with nutrition and delicious flavor.
What do you need to make a BBQ chicken burger?
These healthy BBQ chicken burgers are my favorite thing to grill on the grill in the summer. Here’s everything you need:
- chicken: We are using lean ground chicken as the base for these burgers. I recommend 93% leanness or less. The leaner it is, the more likely it is to be too dry.
- sweet potato: As I mentioned earlier, chop up a small sweet potato and add it straight to the chicken burger mixture.
- BBQ Sauce: Feel free to use your favorite brand of BBQ sauce. (I personally love Stubb’s!) This keeps the burger juicy and flavorful.
- Additional mixins: I also add chopped onion, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper to the chicken patty mixture and it tastes very good.
- bread: Feel free to use any hamburger bun you like (gluten-free buns work too).
- topping: Top these barbecue chicken burgers with sharp cheddar cheese, additional barbecue sauce, butterhead lettuce, and sliced red onion, if desired!

Make this burger your own
- Don’t have any ground chicken? You could use the same amount of ground turkey or beef instead.
- Please select your source. I love the sweet and tangy flavor of BBQ sauce on these chicken burgers, but you could also use buffalo sauce!
- Do not use dairy products. Skip the cheddar cheese, use your favorite vegan cheese slices, or top your BBQ chicken burger with vegan cheese sauce, green tahini sauce, or delicious guacamole.
- Don’t eat low-carb or grain-free. If you like, eat a healthy chicken burger wrapped in a lettuce wrap instead of a bun. Then just skip the cheese and use one of the sauces above!
- Enjoy it as a topping. Get creative with your favorite burger toppings. Fresh avocados and tomatoes would also be great.
How to Grill BBQ Chicken Burgers
Get all the tips and tricks here on how to grill burgers to perfection every time!
- Mix the burgers. Start by mixing all the burger ingredients (except the toppings and bun, of course). I like to do this by hand for ease.
- Divide the patties. Divide chicken burger mixture into four 1/2-inch patties.
- Get the grill ready. Preheat the grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and scrape up any remaining food scraps from the last grilling.
- Cook hamburgers. Cook chicken burgers for 5 to 8 minutes per side.
- Don’t forget the cheese! During the last few minutes of cooking the burgers, add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Cover the grill so the cheese can melt.
- Top and serve. Place your burger on a bun and pile high with your favorite toppings!
Can I make this on the stove?
entirely! Add 1/2 tablespoon olive oil to a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, cook BBQ chicken burgers until no longer pink, 4 to 5 minutes per side.

When will the chicken burger be finished?
These sweet potato chicken burgers are fully cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a good idea to use a meat thermometer so you don’t risk losing the juices when cutting into the burger.
Freezer-Friendly BBQ Chicken Burger
Burgers are the best meal to keep in the freezer during the summer (and all year long!). There are two ways:
- Freeze before cooking: Shape the burgers and place them in an airtight, freezer-friendly bag or container. When stacking burgers, it is a good idea to add wax or parchment paper between the layers to prevent them from sticking together. Store frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, you can thaw it in the refrigerator before cooking, or cook it directly from frozen. Just cook it a little longer from frozen.
- Freeze after cooking: Let the burger patties cool completely before placing them in an airtight freezer-safe container or bag. As mentioned above, if you stack your burgers, add wax or parchment paper between the layers. Store frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator and then reheat on both sides in the microwave or on the stovetop for a few minutes. You can also reheat it directly from frozen. We recommend heating it on the stovetop.
